How much of modern Wicca and its Neo-Pagan offshoots were influenced by the works of Crowley? Join Natalie Long as she provides answers based on the latest scholarly works on the subject to these and other burning questions on the foundations of Wicca.

    Babalon Rising 2010, 2012 & 2016
Io, Kypris! Hail, Aphrodite! She who rises from Her bath off the rocky shores of Paphos! In most Aphrodisia, the ritual procession leads the icons of Aphrodite and Peitho (Persuasion) and the line of joyful celebrants to the bathing place where the statues are washed and freshly adorned, the men and women are instructed in the Mysteries of Aphrodite, and the priestess gives them gifts. The ritual is performed in the Greek ritual style, with introductions and explanations beforehand. Celebrants are encouraged to wear flowers, as this is most pleasing to Aphrodite. Our Aphrodisia could be very much like the ancient rite. Then again, it will have been written by BR 2012 participants, adapting and interpreting the Love Goddess for the New Aeon. .... So it could be VERY different. Join us as we honor the Goddess of Love, Beauty, Sex, and Passion.

    INVOCATION OF THE TURBAN
I am a man, like any man,
With feet of clay and cheeks of tan.
But when I wrap my turban on
    The Gods are near.
    I’m Baba Lon.
I eat too much. I drink too much,
    A greedy, selfish such-and-such.
But when I wrap my turban on
    My mind is clear.
    I’m Baba Lon.
A lazy coward, vain, and violent,
Chatter on when I should stay silent.
But when I wrap my turban on
    I have no fear.
    I’m Baba Lon.
I’m mean and cruel like Genghis Khan,
Spend too much time with the TV on.
But when I wrap my turban on
    Great Truths appear.
    I’m Baba Lon.

    Presented by: Nema

    Babalon Rising 2010
The Triple Goddess, as Maiden, Mother and Crone, is incomplete without a fourth facet, the Lover. Babalon, as a goddess/entity designed and developed mainly by men, seems lonely without her other three aspects. What some may see as mutual opposition can be used for mutual power.
Nema, author of Maat Magick and The Way of Mystery, is both a Thelemite and a coven Elder in Circle of the Sacred Grove, Church of Pantheist Wicca. A survivor of Cincinnati’s “witchy wars” of the early 1970s, she invites your participation in the first rite of “Maatcraft”.

  • Clearing the Paths to Sex Magick Part 1: Conceptual Blocks and Barriers
    Presented by:
    Linda Berry
    Babalon Rising 2011
This is not a casual process. If you wish to do it right all parts of you have to be comfortable with it. How capable are you of opening up to the flow of energy? What are you planning to do?
Deep down ethics. Do you feel worthy to connect with this energy? Do you have permission to succeed? How do you feel about your partner in this process? Doing two radically different things at once. This is a different kind of energy focus. Discipline to take the sexual energy and build it and focus it into a structure. What worlds do you need to be in to accomplish this process? Is it accomplishment? Experience with your partner, you can’t be figuring out what to do with someone and handling magic at the same time. A certain passiveness in body to let the mind shape the energy?

  • Deep Rapport Workshop / Group Mind Ritual
    Presented by: Phil Farber

    Babalon Rising 2012
The human organism is built to share feelings and to empathize with other humans. Most of the time, however, our ability to resonate with others on a deep level comes somewhat randomly and haphazardly. Phil Farber will present a series of interactive exercises to explore what kinds of things bring us into deeper and more enjoyable states of rapport. Experience it for yourself! The workshop will culminate with a Group Mind Ritual which can demonstrate some of the stranger phenomena associated with deep rapport. Did you know that it's possible to think with a mind other than your own? Whenever two or more humans join together, there is an interaction on an unconscious level that often influences and guides the flow of the group. When a group is brought together with attention to rapport, the Group Mind can be brought to the surface, explored, and communicated with in very direct ways. Join us for a practical and experiential session, sharing rapport and chatting with our own Group Mind!

  • Developmental Pychology and the Aeon of the Child
    Presented by: Soror Madimi

    Babalon Rising 2017
The Aeon of the Child is a key concept in Thelema and in Crowley’s writings.  Interestingly, during the early part of the 20th century, a number of theories were developed to explain stages of childhood development.  Some of these theories have identified specific markers of wellness in children. Many of these markers of wellness coincide with characteristics Crowley identified with the Aeon of the Child. Additionally, Crowley indicates that the key features of a child’s True Will are evident at particularly young ages. We will emphasize the role of spontaneity, play, and fun in the Great Work, and explore ways that childhood development can provide a metaphor for magical development.

  • Do What Thou Wilt: The Kaboom of Chaos Magick!
Presented by: Amanda and David Torrey and Terra Incognita

    Babalon Rising 2010
For many people the worst fear is Chaos. Un-structure, loss of control, Zen, serendipity, trusting the Gods. This workshop is an ecstatic look at what happens when dogma is eschewed and Love is the only Law. When nothing is forbidden and everything is permitted you get the most visceral approach to results-oriented Magick. The book Condensed Chaos by Phil Hine (and his core principals) is the basic text for this workshop, but our get-together is more about altering conscious in radical ways. Exploding assumptions ... Random Acts of Kindness ... Accepting the Stranger into the Temple. Let's see who shows up and what we want to create together, on this day at this time. True Gnosis allows fate to roll the dice.
  • Dr. John Montanee: Patron of Ritual Drummers to Drum Loa
    Presented by: Louis Martiniè
    Babalon Rising 2012
Dr. John Montanee was one of the first and perhaps the most powerful of the early New Orleans Voodoo Drummers and Doctors (approx. 1815 to 1885). A historical and a folkloric discussion of Dr. John’s life will be provided. The position of Dr. John as the Magus in the New Orleans Voodoo Tarot (Martinie and Glassman, 1992) and New Orleans Voodoo in general will be discussed. This will be followed by a description of a rite in which dust and waters from the Doctor’s gravesite will be combined with his signatures and documents from his life to invite this great spirit to enter the head, heart, hands and drum heads of the ritualists.
  • Ritual to Dr. John Montanee: New Orleans Drum Patron to Loa
    Presented by: Louis Martini
    è
    Babalon Rising 2012
An altar to Dr. John Montanee will be constructed and those attending will be invited to leave gifts. Dust and waters from the Doctor’s gravesite will be combined with his signatures and documents from his life and used to invite this grand loa to enter and head, heart, and hands of the drummers and their drums heads. This ritual is meant to offer honor and respect to the good Doctor; to invite him to rejoin the community of living drummers….not to ask anything of him. It is a celebration of Dr. John’s transition from “patron of ritual drummers (New Orleans Voodoo Tarot; Martinie and Glassman, 1992)” to drum loa. Attendance at an earlier session is helpful in the performance of this ritual though not necessary. Please bring any percussion instruments you may have. Dancers are very welcome.
  • Dr. John Montanee: A New Orleans Loa: 3 Conjures
    Presented by: Lou Martiniè

    Babalon Rising 2014
These necromantic conjures open the road for Dr. John to move among the living as a loa if it is his will to do so. Historic and folkloric research will be presented to assist the practitioner in the performance of the 3 conjures. The Pelican focuses on action, movement, and objects. Talking in the Voice utilizes speech. A Conjure Ball , the third conjure, takes place in mind/spirit. One or more of the conjures will be performed at the session. Materials useful for the conjures will be provided. The ritualists and voodoos at past Babalon Rising Fests have provided significant insights for these 3 callings. I will be available throughout the festival for relevant experiments and performance of all of the conjures individually or in group. Background: DrJohnVoodoo.com (under construction)

  • Dynamic Body Magick
    Presented by: Frater Lugal

    Babalon Rising 2007

Can the manipulation of these chemicals cause direct magical change in our lives? Join cutting-edge biomage Zac Walters as he introduces you to the fundamentals of the Biochemical Anthropomorphic paradigm, and shows how vitamins and supplements serve as a new alchemy for a new kind of magick. This workshop also includes visualization techniques for optimizing your Body/Mind interface, a discussion on practical biosorcery, and modes for optimizing rituals within the Biochemical Anthropomorphic paradigm.
  • E= ???
Presented by: Lady Lyn and Terra Incognita

    Babalon Rising 2010
Ever wonder what some people are talking about when they discuss being ‘energy aware’? Are you curious why certain individuals just have that special spark? With everyone? Do you sometimes feel a strong connection with a new person but not sure why? Lady Lyn de Pomona and friends will be conducting an active, hands-on workshop that will help you identify how energy works. Most importantly, we will discuss theories about what energy is. There are many labels used for "types" of energy from physics to Sex Magick ... so we will discuss the differences. Attendees will create energy balls, share energy, cycle energy, identify energy all the while answering questions that may arise. It is strongly suggested neophytes attend this presentation if you anticipate attending the Sacred Touch workshop for the first time.

  • Eclipses: Gateways to the Shadow Self
    Presented by:
    Bill Duvendack
    Babalon Rising 2016
Every calendar year there are four eclipses that happen. There are two Lunar, and two Solar. These are particularly powerful times of the year, and usually coincide with the changing seasons of spring and autumn, and most times happen near equinoxes. When these events happen, there is an increased current of energy that can be used to access the shadow self. The shadow self is particularly open during these times, and it can be worked with easier with more dramatic results. This presentation will cover different techniques to use depending on the type of eclipse, and will discuss how the sign the heavenly body is in at the time of the eclipse can be used to greatest effect. It will also cover blending the two dominant energies together, addressing both the sun and the moon placements of such an event. Handouts will be provided.
  • Egyptian Astrology
    Presented by:
    Bill Duvendack
    Babalon Rising 2012
As most know, astrology goes back to the most ancient of times. Western astrology’s roots date back to ancient Sumeria and ancient Egypt. Astrology has also evolved throughout the centuries, and this is worth mentioning because in different belief systems, different names were ascribed to the signs, etc. In this workshop, participants will get introduced to ancient Egyptian astrology, and see how ideas and concepts have changed from then until now.
  • Elemental Workings for Personal Balance
    Presented by: Paul Ravenscraft
    Babalon Rising 2007

The Five Elements represent a familiar model for describing ourselves and our experiences in the world. As individuals, we may identify more strongly with one or more of these elements than with the others. What if I find myself too flighty, too pushy or too wishy-washy in dealing with others? Are there simple tools and techniques that are available to bring the parts of myself into balance? We will explore synergies between intention, affirmation, invocation, assumption of godforms, adoption of magickal names and personas, and creation and use of sigils for associating with an element and its attributes. The facilitator is a contributor to the "Magic on the Edge" Anthology, edited by Taylor Ellwood (Immanion Press, 2007). His work in that anthology provides much of the basis for this workshop.

Join Lon Milo DuQuette for an afternoon of real magical practice as he shows you how easy it is to journey in vision to the Elemental Worlds and Aethyric Heavens. Come prepared to participate.
  • The Eternal Feminine Exalts Us: A Tea Ceremony
    Presented by: Amy Harmon

    Babalon Rising 2016
The Eternal Feminine is a concept describing the feminine manifestation of divine energy. Masculinity and femininity are regarded as equally powerful and necessary to the balance of life. The form taken by the Eternal Feminine differs among religious traditions, but is universal. The experience of the Eternal Feminine which "draws us on high” is sublime and gives us a glimpse into the Universe. This ceremony will invoke various elemental Goddesses through the combination of earth, water, fire, air and spirit. Tea involves the use of fire to warm the water that releases the steam as the tea steeps. As each participant drinks the various teas, the spirit of each Goddess will be invoked and remind us of the Eternal Feminine within us all.

  • Finding Your Inner Pantheon
    Presented by: Phil Farber

    Babalon Rising 2012
Recent discoveries in neuroscience suggest that the magical practices of invocation and evocation are based in naturally-occurring brain functions. In most forms of ritual magick, we learn to experience entities that come from tradition, from grimoires and established systems. What about the lesser-known entities that are personal to our own lives, that arise or may be contacted through the interaction of our brains with the world? Learn a simple, powerful method to identify, access and explore your own personal pantheon, the conscious elements that contribute to your own existences. This is often a surprising and paradigm-shifting process.
  • Fire From Heaven: The Art and Processes of Evocation
    Presented by: Frater Uranus

    Babalon Rising 2016
Fire from Heaven examines the processes of evocation including looking at the use of the words invocation & evocation and how they were used in the traditional grimoires. Jason will be discussing the stages of a traditional Solomonic ceremony and also explore how they relate to modern ceremonial practices of the post Golden Dawn systems of Magick. Evocation is a seemingly complex art when we examine the instructions & techniques of the medieval grimoire texts but once the keys to this process are laid out and understood, the simplicity of evocation ceremonies becomes more evident and easily digested.
  • Fire and Ice
    Presented by: Frater Bedlam

    Babalon Rising 2016
Using the backdoor to reach the kundalini chakra and Galdr intonations simultaneously…we unlock the gateways with both fire and ice, self-imposed, possibly boundary breaking style gnosis…prying open our third (brown) eye in metaphorical and literal affirmations of the divine.  We will set forth our will using this intense experience to release our statement of intent (to be reviled at the time).  As consent and safety come first, you may choose to refrain from participating in the ritual and will be able to have a less active role as a guard outside the temple space or you may simply leave after the lecture portion is complete.
  • Fire Sacrifice to Coatlicue Teteo'Inan (Inanna)
    Presented by: Kyleigh & Krystaline

    Babalon Rising 2017
The Aztecs used a sacrifice ritual to the Coatlicue Teteo'Inan (Nahuatl for She of the Serpent Skirt our Mother of the Gods and Creation) in order to cleanse and purify themselves by fire of their burdens and sins. This sacrifice entails bearing your inner secrets, offering yourself in submission, and casting them into the fire then one becomes cleansed as the Goddess offers her grace in exchange. A Grand Rite reserved only for those willing to bear it all and submit to her grace. This ceremony takes you into the realm of legend and primordial power, where tradition, emotion, energy and the divine collide and mingle to bring you a powerful and one-of-a-kind-transcendental encounter.

  • Forgotten Templars: The Untold Origins of Ordo Templi Orientis
    Presented by: Richard Kaczynski

    Babalon Rising 2014
An unlikely cocktail of actors and musicians, doctors and merchants, anarchists and sexual reformers populated the occult underground of the late nineteenth century. One by-product of this strange brew was the magical order known as Ordo Templi Orientis, or the Order of Oriental Templars, with its controversial mix of esoteric Freemasonry, yoga and sex magic. While its name is familiar thanks to its second Grand Master, Edwardian enfant terrible Aleister Crowley, its origins have subsisted as shadowy mytho-history. Until now. This revelatory study brings into sharp focus the perfect storm of personalities, movements, and circumstances that gave rise to one of the largest and most influential secret societies of our time. It is a story that has waited a century to be told.

    Presented by: Ken Henson

    Babalon Rising 2017
While the history of late modern magick tends to focus on Europe, and especially England, magick in the American Midwest has flourished since the mid 19th century, creating its own particular current that is still practiced today. This presentation begins with an examination of 19th century Midwestern occult practices, and explores the goddesses our predecessors engaged, including their practice of alchemical, elemental magick. New (and perhaps surprising) connections are made between extraterrestrials, Crowley's Babalon, and the worship of Aphrodite.

  • The Gnostic Mass
Local bodies and loose confederations of wandering ritualistic troubadours from all over the US have presented the Gnostic Mass at Babalon Rising. We are proud to host anywhere from 1-3 Gnostic Mass celebrations throughout the course of the festival.
    From Thelemapedia
Aleister Crowley wrote The Gnostic Mass—technically called Liber XV or "Book 15"—in 1913 while travelling in Moscow. In many ways it is similar in structure to the Mass of the Roman Catholic Church. However, the comparison ends there, as the Gnostic Mass is a celebration of the principles of Thelema. The ceremony calls for five officers: a priest, a priestess, a deacon, and two acolytes, called “children”. The end of the ritual culminates in the consumation of the eucharist, which is a glass of wine and the host, called a Cake of Light, after which the congregant proclaims “There is no part of me that is not of the gods!”
It is the central rite of Ordo Templi Orientis and it's ecclesiastical arm, Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica. The Gnostic Mass will be performed at the Babalon Rising Festival by [presenter].
As for why Crowley wrote the Gnostic Mass, he explains in Confessions:
While dealing with this subject I may as well outline its scope completely. Human nature demands (in the case of most people) the satisfaction of the religious instinct, and, to very many, this may best be done by ceremonial means. I wished therefore to construct a ritual through which people might enter into ecstasy as they have always done under the influence of appropriate ritual. In recent years, there has been an increasing failure to attain this object, because the established cults shock their intellectual convictions and outrage their common sense. Thus their minds criticize their enthusiasm; they are unable to consummate the union of their individual souls with the universal soul as a bridegroom would be to consummate his marriage if his love were constantly reminded that its assumptions were intellectually absurd.
I resolved that my Ritual should celebrate the sublimity of the operation of universal forces without introducing disputable metaphysical theories. I would neither make nor imply any statement about nature which would not be endorsed by the most materialistic man of science. On the surface this may sound difficult; but in practice I found it perfectly simple to combine the most rigidly rational conceptions of phenomena with the most exalted and enthusiastic celebration of their sublimity.
Crowley published the text of the Gnostic Mass three times: in 1918 in a publication called The International, in 1919 in The Equinox (III:1), and in 1929 in Magick in Theory and Practice. It was privately performed while Crowley was at the Abbey of Thelema, and it's first public performance was March 19, 1933 by Wilfred T. Smith and Regina Kahl in Hollywood, California at the first Agape Lodge.
  • Gnostic Pentagram Ritual
Presented by: Temple Ne-ga-ee-kia IOT North America

    Babalon Rising 2014
Join Temple Ne-ga-ee-kia and the North American Section of the Illuminates of Thanateros in opening of the Chaos Track. The GPR is a central rite in the IOT. An excellent banishing / grounding ritual for any paradigm.
From Liber Kaos by Peter Carroll:
The Gnostic Pentagram Ritual begins with a visualization of radiance in five areas of the body. Each visualization is assisted by a vibration of one of the vowels sounds I, E, A, O, U. The sounds are vibrated loudly and each is sustained for and entire slow exhalation. Each should produce a physical sensation in the part of the body to which it is attributed. In effect the body is being played like a musical instrument with each part resonating in sympathy to a particular tone.
The ritual entails the visualization of images of radiance within specific areas of the body. These areas correspond with the bodily chakras of some oriental traditions but not others. There is actually little congruence between the various oriental systems. What all these systems are designed to do is to create psychic images of various parts of the body to facilitate greater psychosomatic control. The Gnostic Pentagram Ritual is named in commemoration of certain magickal schools of antiquity which designated the magical force of the universe IAO.
  • The Goddess of Love is not a Bimbo
    Presented by:
    Laurelei Black
    Babalon Rising 2008
Too many people in contemporary society, including Neo-Pagans, have the unfortunate misconception that Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, is a fuzzy-brained, bleach blond who is only interested in satiating her own desires. They don't see the inspiration for the arts, the protection of marriage, the quickening of fertility, or the motherly affection that are also her hallmarks. Sadly, many people are also closed off to her many pleasures and delights. In this workshop, Laurelei presents a deeper look at Aphrodite's qualities through study of her myths, her many epithets and her Babylonian and Sumerian roots.

In her book The Witches' Key tot he Legion: A Guide to Solomonic Sorcery, Laurelei dives into a goetic practice that is inspired by Traditional Witchcraft with its natural, Shamanic, "low" roots. Join her for discussion of how and why to strip away the artifices from your art where the 72 spirits of the Legion are concerned.

Za'el's brews are powerful, potent alchemical wonders. Veterans to the Babalon Rising Festival will remember fondly that the sacramental wine from the 2006 festival's Gnostic Mass was Za'el's own famous Triple Goddess Blend mead.  This workshop will cover all aspects of homebrewing, including ingrediants, equipment, basic recipes, method, adding herbs, getting supplies, and the legal implications of homebrewing. Za'el informs us that sampling will occur after the workshop!
  • How to Get it Good …when You got it Real Bad (bad knees, bad backs, bad necks, bad …..)
Presented by: Lady Lyn d’ Pomona
    Babalon Rising 2011

There are all sorts of talks out there about how to have good sex or how to liven up your sex or how to attract a mate, but sometimes reality bites! I mean it really, really bites. It bites you in the ass and leg when the sciatica is flaring up and it bites you in the form of a headache when your neck is twisted upside down. It just bites you sometimes and not in a good way of biting.
So what are you gonna do? You and a bunch of your friends are gonna come and learn from Lady Lyn all sorts of tips, techniques, tricks, toys, tools and even some Tantra to help you when you ache in more than one way. We all need to have our sex. We crave that touch in some sensual fashion on our bodies. Now, I won’t say that I can get you to have full coital intercourse but we can help you tap those sexual urges in a fulfilling way. Lyn always interacts with the workshop attendees, so expect to be trying out the tools and toys and even some of the positions – because it only makes sense for you to learn from actually doing, right? No, no, no, we won’t actually be having sex but we will be experimenting with techniques. Let’s have some FUN!
  • Human Interactions with Spirit
    Presented by:
    Marty Laubach
    Babalon Rising 2015
One of my primary research lines is about psychism – human interaction with the spirit world. My most recent work explores stories about spirit to understand the varied characteristics of spirits and therefore their realm. In particular I am focusing on “dark side” or “shadow” spirits – spirits who were not human (ghosts) or part of the “god bureaucracy” (identified and controllable through religion) but instead are part of the wild flora and fauna of the spirit world and may see us more as food or as gateways into the physical and anything else. I will relate some stories of my own experience and ask for your as well. Please be aware that this workshop will be audiotaped as a part of my research, though by default I will remove identifying features of participant contributions.

  • Intent, Sigil Working and the Talisman
    Presented by: Paul Ravenscraft

    Babalon Rising 2008
No issue is more fundamental to personal magickal workings than the connection between the stated intent and the ultimate result. There are simple, yet effective, models for this process; we will explore at least one example in this context. Formulas involving the intent will be examined, and we will delve into details of sigil working, focusing on the methods of Aảos as a point of departure. And how could such an analysis be complete without an examination of the manifestation and nature of resistance?

  • Intro to the Magick of Martial Arts
    Presented by: Frater Ta Yu
    Babalon Rising 2011

All of the same skill sets developed in martial arts are the ones that make a successful magician. From breath control to mindfulness and altered states of consciousness to the awareness and utilization of subtle energies, magick ritual and meditation have much in common with martial arts and meditation. Not to mention the fact that a Thelemite must be able to defend their freedom to be, if necessary! In this class we will be exploring the very basics of three martial arts: Tai Chi Chuan, Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do. We will do so in a way that ties our practice to ritual in several ways. We will explore the subtle energy of Chi, and how it works with the body/mind's more obvious energies. We will explore basic warm-ups, stretches and poses from all three styles that also teach you about the flow of Chi, and which will inform both your martial and magickal techniques. Then we will practice some basic techniques from each that are effective and could form the basis of a private practice. The ultimate goal is to get attendees to have a basic appreciation of the variation among these styles, and to have them more aware of energy generation and manipulation in ritual. It is hoped that some will actually pursue further training and continue to have it augment their ritual and their freedom.

  • Intro to Western Sacred Sexuality
    Presented by:
    Laurelei Black
    Babalon Rising 2014, 2017
Sex is a sacrament. It is a Divine gift – one that allows us to manifest fertility, symbolize the complete unity of masculine and feminine, and express feelings of love and joy. Sadly, many of us in Western culture have devalued and demonized this sacred act by buying into the old philosophy that sex is dirty, obscene, gratuitous and decadent. Posh! In this candid and open discussion on the origins, practice and necessity of sacred sexual practices, Laurelei will lead participants in an exploration of ideas surrounding the sometimes taboo (but always titillating) subjects of sex and spirituality.
  • Introduction to Western Sex Magick
    Presented by:
    Bill Duvendack
    Babalon Rising 2015
A taboo subject, to be sure, Western Sex Magick is sometimes seen as nebulous or daunting when first looked at, and this is looking at it beyond just the sexuality and ethics on the surface. However, it is worth considering as a magickal technique because its potency can almost not be matched. The surprising thing about this technique is that anyone can do it, and it can manifest physical results when developed. In this two hour class, we will discuss different techniques, as well as what can be done and even how to do it! Handouts will be provided.

  • The Iron Ritualist Tournament
    Presented by: Frater Lugal

    Babalon Rising 2012
What would you do if you were told you had only 30 minutes to create, rehearse, and execute a public ritual with little more than the random contents in the back of someone else's backpack and you may or may not have worked with before? This tournament will let you find out. The Iron Ritualist Tournament encourages you to pit your Wit, Wisdom, and Will against other teams of experienced and novice occultists. The teams will be composed of 5-7 randomly chosen individuals, very likely from a variety of backgrounds, traditions, camps, sects, kabals, and orders; and thrust them together to forge and perform the best ritual they can. The top teams will advance to go head-to-head in the final to crown our first Babalon Rising Iron Ritualist champions!
    Rules:
-Teams will be limited to 5-7 people with the maximum number of teams being 8.
-Each team will be given 30 minutes to develop their ritual, build their props, and rehearse. They will have 5 minutes to set up the ritual space, and a maximum of 15 minutes to perform their ritual.
-For the first round, each team will be provided identical ritual props with a different sacred passage from a random esoteric text.
-Members may not use their personal ritual gear for the tournament, only that which is provided.
-Remember this is an opportunity to learn as well as perform. Be respectful of your teammates and opponents.
-Preliminary competition will be decided by a panel of expert judges.
-All rules for the finals shall be kept secret until the 1 hour beforehand.
Reserve your spot in the tournament by signing up early on the Babalon Rising yahoo group or commenting on the Facebook page.

  • The Lesser Ritual of the Hexagram
    Presented by:
    Kikhos ba-Midhbar
    Babalon Rising 2011

Two fundamental magical practices are the Lesser Rituals of the Pentagram and Hexagram, yet hidden within them are profound elements that propel one’s practice. The lecture and presentation on the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram revisits the presentation of 2011, which revealed some of the inner symbolism of this deceptively simple exercise, and proposed that it was, in fact, not a banishing in the common sense at all, but rather a preparation for Knowledge & Conversation with one’s Holy Guardian Angel. This year, more will be revealed. As a companion lecture, there will also be a presentation and discussion of the Lesser Ritual of the Hexagram. What began as a group ritual of the Aeon of Osiris has been adapted for the Aeon of Horus for the individual magician’s use. We will explore its alchemical formulae and astrological ramifications. Like the LRP, the mechanics of the ritual’s symbolism will be revealed.

  • Living Myth
    Presented by: Amanda Torrey

    Babalon Rising 2014
Myth is not a fairytale, but a vitally important part of our psyche and emotional well-being. Using the work of Carl Jung, Mircea Eliade and Joseph Campbell as a template, TempleWhore discusses how ancient ideas about myth and ritual can be used in a modern context to explore the Mystery of Life. The loss of myth in the 21st century and concurrent ascent of a non-metaphysical scientific perspective has resulted in a psychic dichotomy that has created worldwide neurosis. By understanding what Mircea Eliade calls the "eternal return," a cyclic going back to a mythical age or sacred time, we can utilize the wisdom of our ancestors and the timeless stories they venerated. Campbell believed that the cultural neurosis Jung spoke of could be healed by understanding archetypes, symbols and mythic metaphors. He said: " The first function of mythology is to reconcile waking consciousness to this universe as it is." Classic rites of passage and easily recognizable patterns of Being are central to Campbell's ideas. His Heroes Journey can be a guide to the three stages of life (separation, trial/victory, death/transformation) as well as transcendent reality. TempleWhore would like to conclude her presentation with a group ritual that uses mythic material to heal and transform the participants.

Lets talk about what happens when outside forces such as family members, other lovers, and jobs threaten the security of a relationship. Sex workers have issues that are unique in navigating their personal relationships, and then there are substance abuse issues, such as what happens when one partner decided to follow a track of sobriety, or choose a new spiritual path? The great news is that Thelemic philosophers we are well prepared to adjust adapt and thrive, the not so good news is that sometimes it hurts. • Maat Magick: Balance in Changing Times
    Presented by:
    Nema
    Babalon Rising 2006, 2007, & 2008

Learn about the mysterious Double Current of 93/696, and how the Aeon of Ma'at works with the Aeon of Horus. Sparked by Soror Nema's 1974 experience of Liber Pennae Praenumbra: The Book of the Foreshadowing of the Feather, which expresses the words of Maat the goddess of Justice & Truth, the 696 Current balances the work of Crowley and the 93 Current. While the power of Horus is one of expansion and brilliance, that of Maat is of insight and mystery. As Yang & Yin, Androgyne & Gynander, these Twins transform the two-sided Tree of Life & Death for the Next Step in evolution, leading eventually towards N'Aton, the collective global mind of awakened humanity. In practice some Thelemites have found that the magicks of Horus are often catalyzed and accelerated by those of Maat, forming a synergy of illumination and mutation. The Word of Horus is ABRAHADABRA, and that of Maat is IPSOS. Discover more about this contraversial and illuminating Thelemic path from the incredible woman who started it all.

    Presented by: Austin Coppock
    Babalon Rising 2007

As a practioner of the arts of both astrology and magick, Austin Coppock has been continually befuddled by the strange abyss which has cropped up between practitioners of these most (un)holy and awesome hermetic arts/sciences. Through this lecture he will try to bridge that abyss by demonstrating the origins of both systems in the work of Hermes Trimegestus, and the cross-pollination between Babylonian and Egyptian Astrology on Hebrew Kabbalah. He will show you how "forgotten" houses of astrology relate to magick, and how an astrologer's philosophy can co-exist with the Thelemic concept of True Will.

    Presented by:
    Frater Zentra El
    Babalon Rising 2016
"Once upon a time, there was a place of great goodness, called the White Lodge. Gentle fawns gamboled there amidst happy, laughing spirits. The sounds of innocence and joy filled the air. And when it rained, it rained sweet nectar that infused one's heart with a desire to live life in truth and beauty. Generally speaking, a ghastly place, reeking of virtue's sour smell. Engorged with the whispered prayers of kneeling mothers, mewling newborns, and fools, young and old, compelled to do good without reason ... But, I am happy to point out that our story does not end in this wretched place of saccharine excess. For there's another place, its opposite:"

Wise elders can teach much about family and traditional lore, other practices are learned from reading, hearsay, and inspired experimentation. We consider banishing, aura cleaning, talismans, sigils, invocations and other methods. Please share your own knowledge with us!

  • Makume-Gane: Practical Alchemy
    Presented by: Athol Wollard

    Babalon Rising 2008
Makume-Gane is a unique, very difficult, art form to achieve. It is made by combining multiple layers of various precious metals together and then carving it to achieve a wood grain effect. A flat piece of Makume-Gane consisting of 13 whole layers bonded together (not melted) is about as thick as a piece of typing paper!  This form of working with precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, copper, uranium, etc) began use in the orient when samurai swords were no longer allowed to be carried. Instead the focused on the cases and pommel, adorning it with very expensive and elaborate Makume-Gane to show their status in society.  Makume Gane is a dying art in today’s world, and the painstaking procedure to produce these pieces can be time consuming. If done wrong the result is a chunk of useless mixed metals that can only be sent to a refinery for separation which is quite costly.

  • The Method of Science, the Aim of Religion: The Scientific Method and How To Apply It to Magical Practice
    Presented by: Richard Kaczynski

    Babalon Rising 2014
A common assertion in ritual magick is that magicians apply the scientific method to spiritual practice, following rigorous rules in their rituals and keeping detailed records of their activities. However, few teachers actually discuss the scientific method. This talk will describe how to apply research methodology to magick, and how to become a critical evaluator of your own magical work. How do you prove causality? What are possible alternative explanations? How to improve your approah? What does Occam's razor have to do with this? Dr. K has taught graduate level courses in research design and statistics since 1988.
  • The Methods of Science?
    Presented by:
    Marty Laubach
    Babalon Rising 2007
We like to think that spiritual experiences are more than a flight of fantasy and can tell us something about ourselves and even the world we live in. Sometimes the experience is so intense that we look for “real world” validation, but when we do, we are either told that we are delusional or what we hear leaves us with a taste of pseudoscience and psychobabble. This workshop will touch on this idea of validation and the challenge of Crowley’s credo “the method of science, the aim of religion,” and will discuss what science can and can’t tell us about spiritual experiences.
  • Method of Science, Aim of Religion
    Presented by:
    Marty Laubach
    Babalon Rising 2016

Marty is especially interested in examples that do not follow expectations laid out in texts.

    Presented by: Jason Winslade

    Babalon Rising 2014
With the recent California shootings bringing the topic of misogyny and the so-called "Men's Movement" to the fore of the national conversation, now more than ever we need to address these issues in our magickal communities. This workshop will feature discussions of masculinity and gender as related to magickal practice and occult history, as well as focusing on these issues in our contemporary festival scene. I wish to build on the discussion I facilitated last year at In Nomine Babalon and see if we can take things further, especially on the issues of privilege, rape culture, and being an effective ally. Come and share your experiences, stories, and opinions in what should be a lively discussion.

    Terra Incognita

    Babalon Rising 2010
So you're looking for your Holy guardian Angel (HGA)? A workshop designed to assist in finding and then bonding to one's Holy Guardian Angel. Our mystical journey begins with a discussion of how we view daemon through personal experiences. Depending on time and interest, these dialogues could easily lead into conversations on service, submission and secularism relevant to our connection to these sexually charged energy beings. Addressing questions about polytheism, when we're really talking about monism; differences between egregores, ghosts, demons and daemon; how entities are helpful on a spiritual quest; and how once discovered, we can keep an HGA relationship vital through  channeling and Sex Magick.

  • The New History of Sex Magick
    Presented by:
    Donald M. Kraig
    Babalon Rising 2009
Sex Magick is simply the ability to channel the powerful energies raised during sexual activity into purposes other than pleasure. Most occult historians have seen this as being a rather direct line, primarily from the Sufis to the O.T.O. to Aleister Crowley. Here is a well documented new and fascinating history of how this system developed, tracing it from ancient times, through the Kabalists, some of the great writers (including William Blake and Emmanuel Swedenborg) and even into the hands of the surrealists!

  • The Nexus of Magick and Religion
    Presented by: Michael A. Manor

    Babalon Rising 2006

Do not be surprised if I do not do things the same way you do! Do bring an open mind.

Although such union is individual, incommensurable, and incommunicable, the service provides a group (or solo) ceremony to express the aspiration to and fulfillment of this cardinal attainment.  The full text of this ritual may be viewed here: http://hermetic.com/dionysos/daimonicv.htm

Magicked yourself a job, but it turns out to be more like the hex you did to your slumlord for not fixing your heat all winter? A serious (but also not so serious) discussion on the effects of magick and how to wrangle them into a more nonsensical, yet sensical, fashion. • Panic in Detroit: The Magician and the Motor City
    Presented by: Richard Kaczynski

    Babalon Rising 2006
Magician and poet Aleister Crowley came to Detroit in 1918 to establish the American headquarters for his mystical society, Ordo Templi Orientis, and to publish his occult journal, The Equinox. He and his associates found themselves at the center of a sensational scandal, accused of obscenity, bigamy, drugging, murder and more. While the charges were unfounded, the drama, with its front-page headlines in Detroit's major newspapers, remains a cautionary tale about mass hysteria that is as relevant today as it was then. This period of history is a little known but fascinating chapter for the O.T.O., and is based on Richard's 2006 release, "Panic in Detroit."

Not an easy road to follow, all the partners involved must be honest and have great time-management and communication skills. It is a lifestyle that can be very rewarding. Explore lessons learned on the road by the Babalon Finishing School, as members paint a broad canvas filled with joy and heartache on the way to becoming Ethical Sluts.

  • Perspectives on Self Initiation: the Practitioner, the Priest, and the Professor
    Presented by:
Marty LaubachLouis Martiniè, & Linda Clemons
    Babalon Rising 2008
Initiation is a religious practice that is generally understood as involving socialization and acceptance into a religious community, but American Neopaganism, with its emphasis on individualism and autonomy, has evolved a meaning that appears to bypass the community. The practice of self-initiation effectively redefines the community into which the practitioner is initiated to be a community consisting of the spirit world. This allows a practitioner to make claims of spiritual attainment, but also presents the community with the task of accepting or rejecting that claim. In response to the postmodern critique of contemporary academic writing, this paper is a collaborative effort that preserves the voices of a magic practitioner, a New Orleans Voodoo priest, and a sociology professor.

    Presented by:
    Lacrimae Mundi
    Babalon Rising 2010
According to a recent poll, there are up to two million people in current american society, that identify themselves as polyamorous. Part of our role as Thelemites is to provide an example for how to live outside the lines so to speak, and still be happy, fulfilled and carry on mature relationships. Polyamory represents a lifestyle choice that carries throughout our mundane as well as sacred lives, and it carries with it a whole host of complications. This workshop addresses some of the larger societal issues pertaining to lifestyle choice, such as how to talk to family members, children, or outside authorities such as schools, or medical professionals. We will also be discussing how to introduce people to your relationship that are not familiar with polyamory.

Finally we will conclude with a brief discussion about creative applications for this sort of micro-devotion and perhaps personal reflections. • Pranayama: Breath of Spirit
    Presented by: Soror Madimi

    Babalon Rising 2017
Pranayama is a helpful tool in activating kundalini, opening up energetic blockages, and facilitating a state of mental calmness and stillness. A literal translation of Pranayama would be, “controlling or extending life-force." As one limb of yoga, pranayama builds on steady posture and helps clear the way for improved concentration. The limb of Pranayama leads to the limb of Pratyahara, which is a progressive withdrawal of the mind from awareness of sense objects.

In this workshop, we’ll talk a briefly about the theory of Pranayama and its place within a larger system of yoga. We will practice a few methods of using breath to help calm the mind, with a particular aim to improve the quality of an existing meditation practice you may already have. Several other pranayama techniques will also be demonstrated, with time allowed for discussion of experiences within the group.

Find out how breathing can change everything!!! (Do not eat the morning of the workshop...pranayam does not like the presence of food in the stomach. If you must eat, make it light!)
  • Psychic Shielding & Sacred Sex : Introduction
    Presented by: The Pink Sphinx

    Babalon Rising 2011
Sacred Sex can be an amazing tool for communing with the divine and other human beings. As wonderful as connecting with others on an energetic level can be, there can be unintended consequences and undesirable side effects if one does not know how to ground, center and shield properly in physically intimate circumstances. In this unusual and very informative talk, The Pink Sphinx will talk about potential energetic and spiritual boundary issues that can crop up during practicing sacred sex with others, and how to troubleshoot them. For this workshop a background in the basics of energy work will be helpful in understanding the content of this class! If you aren't sure what a "chakra" is, you may feel a bit lost for the duration of this talk. If you find this talk interesting, you'll definitely want to come to the Pt. 2 Practicum! The content of this talk is not gender, /orientation specific. Some "kink content" will be included.
  • Psychic Shielding & Sacred Sex Pt. 2: Practicum
    Presented by: The Pink Sphinx

    Babalon Rising 2011
This workshop is the "practical" compliment to Pink's Psychic Shielding and Sacred Sex talk. In this workshop, attendees of any gender and sexual orientation are invited to learn (or fine tune) techniques for centering, shielding, and grounding that can be applied while performing "sacred/magickal" activities. A background in the basics of energy work will be helpful in understanding the content of this class! If you aren't sure what a "chakra" is, you may feel a bit lost for the duration of this workshop. Attending the "Intro" to this class may be helpful, but it's not required. (Attendants should be aware that demos may include sexual activities ranging from masturbation to penetration. There will be "light kink" in a few of the demos as well. Participants should be aware that the only person they will be expected to touch during the exercizes will be themselves!) The content of this talk is not gender, /orientation specific. Some "kink content" will be included.
  • Psychism & Possession
    Presented by:
    Marty Laubach
    Babalon Rising 2007
The phenomenon of psychism has eluded science since the late 1800s. Despite the 20th century triumph of science’s epistemic authority, the contemporary occult revival has seen 75% of the population claiming at least one experience which science says cannot happen, with 15% claiming it “often.” This study will examine psychism in its most extreme form, possession, to understand what the claimant is experiencing at the level of the stream of consciousness.

  • Qadishti,  an Introduction
    Presented by:
    Laurelei Black
    Babalon Rising 2009, 2010
This group discussion introduces the concept of priestesses and priests of Sacred Sexuality in the modern world. We will discuss the Outer Court Rite of Sacred Touch and hear from the many Qadishti presenters present regarding their offerings and approaches to Sacred Sex. We strongly prefer that Sacred Touch workshop participants attend this workshop first. The modern qadishti (kah-dee-shtee) movement is informed and inspired by the past but not bound to it. Spiritual relevance takes precedence over historicity

  • The Qadishtu Path and Kink: Alice-in-BDSM-land
    Presented by:
    Terra Incognita
    Babalon Rising 2011

Led by Amanda and David Torrey, assisted by the Terra Incognita Intentional community. An interactive workshop that takes us down the BDSM rabbithole to Wonderland, a realm where "politically correct" is tossed out of the Mindfuck Window and pain becomes pleasure. Here we will talk about how ethically applied deviant psychosexual methods can heal seekers/clients when employed by skilled Qadishti. Dominatrix sexwork modalities are common knowledge, but professional bottoms and "selective" submissives are equally sought after in the Q-world. This presentation features TTI's newest apprentice Priestess, the incomparable Mardöll, demo bottom exhibitionist and kinkster extraordinaire.
  • The Qadishtu Path and Magick: Chaos Sex Magick & Ritual

Where the results are not bound by ~rules and regulations~ ... where nothing is true and everything is permitted. Join us and find out. This is an adaptation of our popular Chaos Magick presentation at BR 2010 that hopes to show how eclecticism and creativity are wonderful ways to focus energy in freeform ritual. Various questions about sexual polarity and taboos will be addressed. Magickal Intent will be decided communally and then we'll invite all workshop attendees to join Terra Incognita Saturday night in the BR Flesh Tent for Ritual to share loving energy!
  • The Qadishtu Path and Polyamory: Sex at Dawn
    Presented by:
    Terra Incognita
    Babalon Rising 2011
Led by Amanda and David Torrey, assisted by the Terra Incognita intentional community. An open discussion about the origins of modern sexuality as it applies to non-monogamy, polyamory and expansive loving concepts. Christopher Ryan's and Cacilda Jethá's book Sex at Dawn will be referenced, however it's the scary emotional place where science collides with social norms and alternative lifestyle approaches that we'll explore together. For a Qadishtu Temple of Sexual Magick, polyamory is an occupational hazard.

  • The Qadishti Priesthood
    Presented by: Michael A. Manor

    Babalon Rising 2006
Explore the Mysteries of Sacred Sexuality and learn about the modern priesthood of the Hieros Gamos or "Sacred Marriage Rite". The power of love in all its manifestations, including sexual loving, may be the most powerful force in the universe. It is certainly one of them. Love under Will? Hmm, now there’s an interesting point to consider. We look at the sacramental nature of sexual intercourse, sex as a divine gift valued in and of itself, sex as a means of connecting with spirit, and its potential to heal the world one heart at a time. This workshop is required for all individuals interested in running the "Feast of Flesh" tent during the Feast of the Beast ritual.

  • Radical Thelema
    Presented by:
    Brandy Williams
    Babalon Rising 2016
Nuit is infinite space, Babalon welcomes all, but we are more limited. Thelemites are only human, striving to perfect ourselves through the lessons of incarnation. Radical Thelema dares us to dig to the root of Thelema – challenging us where we block our own progress and engaging our institutions where they create barriers to freedom. Radical Thelema unfolds the work of Babalon on Earth and calls every living soul home to the infinite love of Nuit.
Radical Thelema includes four presentations. Each can be experienced independently, asking questions, presenting tools, and suggesting avenues of experimentation. The presentations are rooted in historic research and contemporary Thelemic work while offering new philosophical and ritual ideas. Together they form a theoretical framework encouraging the construction of new rituals and other Thelemic works.
The initial presentation (titled "Radical Thelema") leverages the wisdom of the community through a structured discussion posing a series of questions on core topics:
    • post-Crowley Thelema
    • woman centered Thelema
    • queer Thelema
    • cultural appropriation in Thelema
    • secrecy
    • appropriate social action
  • Reading of Liber AL vel Legis
    Babalon Rising 2007
This ritual will consist of three dramatic readings of the three chapters of the Book of the Law (Liber AL vel Legis, sub figura CCXX, as delivered by XCIII=418 to DCLXVI) by three magicians who have invoked and will speak as Nuit, Hadit, and Ra-Hoor-Khuit, respectively.  The Book of the Law is the central sacred text of Thelema, written (or received) by Aleister Crowley in Cairo, Egypt in the year 1904. It contains three chapters, each of which was written down in one hour, beginning at noon, on April 8, April 9, and April 10. Crowley claims that the author was an entity named Aiwass, whom he later referred to as his personal Holy Guardian Angel (or "Secret Self").  Although the "messenger" of AL was Aiwass, the Book presents several personalities that are the primary speakers. The key three are the central godforms of the three chapters, Nuit, Hadit, and Ra-Hoor-Khuit. The first chapter is spoken by Nuit, the Egyptian goddess of the night sky, called the Queen of Space. Crowley names her the "Lady of the Starry Heaven, who is also Matter in its deepest metaphysical sense, who is the infinite in whom all we live and move and have our being."  The second chapter is spoken by Hadit, who refers to himself as the "complement of Nu," his bride. As such, he is the infinitely condensed point, the center of her infinite circumference. Crowley says of him, "He is eternal energy, the Infinite Motion of Things, the central core of all being. The manifested Universe comes from the marriage of Nuit and Hadit; without this could no thing be. This eternal, this perpetual marriage-feast is then the nature of things themselves; and therefore everything that is, is a crystallization of divine ecstasy" and "He sees the expansion and the development of the soul through joy."  Ra-Hoor-Khuit is the third speaker, identified as the Crowned and Conquering Child, and the god of War and of Vengeance. Crowley sums up the speakers of the three chapters thus, "we have Nuit, Space, Hadit, the point of view; these experience congress, and so produce Heru-Ra-Ha, who combines the ideas of Ra-Hoor-Khuit and Hoor-paar-Kraat.

  • Sacred Music for Thelemites
    Presented by: Jason Winslade

In this workshop I will share my research into these connections. In addition, I will conduct some experiments to determine what Thelemic sacred music might sound like. Is there a Thelemic version of Kirtan, the call and response devotional chants of the Hindu Bhakti tradition? Join us and see. Bring instruments capable of subtle sounds, like flutes, chimes, singing bowls, didges, and similar instruments. Some percussion is ok, but loud djembes or guitars are discouraged.

    Presented by: Michael Manor

    Babalon Rising 2007
The practice of sacred touch is literally thousands of years old and also brand new. The modern qadishti (kah-dee-shtee) movement is informed and inspired by the past but not bound to it. Spiritual relevance takes precedence over historicity. The earthiness of sacred touch results from a conscious democratizing of sacred sexuality, recognizing that divine gifts should be shared by the many and not limited to the few. Laurelei Black
    Babalon Rising 2014, 2015, 2017

Come now, gentle Graces and fair-haired Muses,
Come hither, foam-born Cyprian Goddess, come,
And in golden goblets pour richest nectar
All mixed in most ethereal perfection,
    Thus to delight us.

    – Sappho
Since the inception of the Babalon Rising Festival, one or more variations of the Sacred Touch Ritual have been made available to attendees who are interested in exploring the world of sacred sexuality. Now, in 2015, Laurelei Black (priestess of Aphrodite and Scarlet Track Organizer) presents a special, women-only Sacred Touch Circle. Why women-only? So many women have expressed an interest in exploring the rituals and processes of sacred sexuality in just such an environment.
    The Process:
Laurelei will be working with a select troupe of friends to provide each woman with intimate sensual touch in a sacred space, as well as guiding the whole group in the intuitive, sensual, and respectful giving of sacred, sensual touch.  As you take your place in the center of the circle (a pillowed oasis on the floor), you will be greeted, anointed, and then asked about personal boundaries and any specific preferences. There you will be made comfortable lying or sitting in whatever position you prefer while we caress and subtly touch on your energy centers in a manner that is both relaxing and invigorating.  The earthiness of Sacred Touch results from a conscious democratizing of sacred sexuality, recognizing that divine gifts should be shared by the many and not limited to the few. Here we celebrate the human body as a vessel to be appreciated as a true treasure.
Each touch encounter will last between 5-15 minutes. Participation is limited only to women (whether woman-born or transgender). This is a sensual time and there will be no direct sexual exchange.  Laurelei: "I find these circles empowering and beautiful for everyone involved. We are starting from a place of love, beauty, joy, pleasure, and personal power."

    Brandy Williams

Crowley and other westerners learned sex magick partly from the teachings of other cultures. This presentation surveys the state of sex magick today, from Chinese texts through newly translated Tantras to Western esotericism. Directed sexual energy accomplishes thaumaturgy; theurgy responds to the call of Babalon and Nuit – unto me! The gendered magick of Thelema leads us to the realization of our own divinity through the sexual relationship of the human with the divine.
  • Sex Magick and the Left Hand Path
    Presented by: Sara Grey

    Babalon Rising 2015
Sex magick has had a long history in western esoteric magick but how is used in the Left Hand Path? During this time we will be discussing what the Left Hand Path is, a brief history of it, how sex magick plays a large role in it and how taboo can put be to work in your rituals and rites. I will then open the floor for active discussion on taboo.
  • Sex and Sex Magick in the Victorian Age
    Presented by: Richard Kaczynski
    Babalon Rising 2014
The 19th and early 20th centuries were a hotbed of discourse on intercourse which spilled over into religion and esotericism. Beginning with the seminal works of Gnostic saints Richard Payne Knight, J.G.R. Forlong, Richard Burton and Hargrave Jennings, we’ll uncover both the literature and practice of sacred sexuality as it sprung up before and beside Ordo Templi Orientis. Come one, come all to hear goodies about:
    • the Golden Dawn’s favorite sexual mystic, Thomas Lake Harris, who taught about breathing exercises, group marriage, and the fairies living in your breasts
    • the sexual mischief of Golden Dawn wanna-be’s Madame and Theo Horos
    • the less than Rosy relationship between sex magick pioneers Hargrave Jennings and Paschal Beverly Randolph
    • Carl Kellner’s encounter with sacred sexuality and its entry into Ordo Templi Orientis
    • the unlikely two degrees of separation between Crowley and New York tantric initiator Oom the Omnipotent (and it doesn’t involve Kevin Bacon)
    • Ida Craddock’s tell-all book about her marriage to an angel with godlike technique
    • Clément du Saint-Marcq’s strange yet compelling argument for what really happened at the Last Supper.
  • Sex Magick for Long-Term Couples
    Presented by:
    Jason Newcomb
    Babalon Rising 2010
There are numerous phrases within the Thelemic literature that promote non-monogamy. But this is not everybody’s lifestyle. Keeping the fire of Eros alive over time is important for active sex magick practitioners.
  • Sex Magick Responsibility
    Presented by:
    Bill Duvendack
    Babalon Rising 2015
When one begins working with sex magick, it quickly becomes apparent how big things manifest, and how accurately at that. While this is a good thing when it comes to magick, it also requires increased responsibility on the part of the practitioner. Thus it is a good idea to be aware of the responsibilities andethics of using this powerful system ahead of time to better prepare for what manifests. In this presentation we will look at the ethics and responsibilities that go along with sex magick. We will discuss different scenarios having to do with the physical plane as well as the astral plane, particularly regarding personal responsibility and accountability.

  • So You Want to Be a Sacred Whore?
    Presented by:
    Terra Incognita
    Babalon Rising 2010
Regardless of the great debate that surrounds ancient Temple Prostitution (Did it really exist?), the archetypal mythology of Sacred Whoredom holds great power. We will talk ~explicitly~ about how this paradigm might manifest in a 21st century Temple based on the Qadishti-oriented experiences of Terra Incognita. Amanda does not use the term Temple Whore lightly and David is an expert on how men fit in as a Qadesh or Priestess consort. From basic apprenticeship, to learning advanced skills of the accomplished Courtesan, nothing is taboo or occult in this presentation. The goal is a practical nuts and bolts exchange of information that will help you establish your own solo practice as a Sacred Intimate or create a larger Houri-esque spiritual community.
  • The Social Paradigm and the Magician
    Presented by: Frater OPV

    Babalon Rising 2012
In the Social Paradigm and the Magician Frater OPV details the processes going on in social interaction and explains the new social paradigm and the role the magician plays. Discussing the topic as a form of psychic interaction he defines the concept of psychic attack & defense and True Will in challenging ways and how to better enact these concepts in the world outside the temple. The lecture relates these concepts as an initiation of the Nephesh, the animal soul and focuses on non-verbal communication and how to express you deep level identity more efficiently.

Sootal'Wuuti (Hopi for StarlightWoman) guides this spiritual adventure with meditation and ancient Indigenous Native herbal ingredients in silence.

  • Sonick Sigil Workshop
    Presented by: Vovin Lonshin

    Babalon Rising 2017
In traditional voodoo, every loa has its own drum beat that is used in rituals to call them. Sonick
Sigil came about as a way to create beats for new loa, and any other spirit, to be used in the same way. The system was created by me and Lou on the drive to Babalon Rising: Da'ath Camp. It was published in “Dr. John Montanee: A Grimoire: The Path of a New Orleans Loa, Resurrection in Remembrance“ by Dr. Louie Martinie. Every letter in the names is represented by a three note measure. Each note can be either a High note (representing the outer rime of traditional drums), a Low note (representing the middle of the drum head) or a Rest. So for example, A=High/High/High and L=Rest/High/Low. (the ALGOL beat is used in my track Black Flame {https://soundcloud.com/vovinlonshin/sets/algol}) In this workshop, after explaining the history of sonick sigil and the basics of how it works, we will take a statement of intent, and reduce it do to a name (probably use a letter from a hat method to get the name). Next, we will take the name and encode it into a beat. I will have handouts with the complete chart of letters. Then, we will come up with any power words or mantra for this sigil. And we will end with a 8 min ritual/performance of the sigil.
  • Sound Numerology
    Presented by:
    Donald M. Kraig
    Babalon Rising 2012
Many people are familiar with modern numerology, but here is a puzzling question about it: Why do the letters “c” and “k” have different numerical values when they sound alike? After all, letters are mere symbols which represent sounds. Therefore, the sound should determine the numerical value, not the letter.  The ancient Kabalists understood this principle. They created a system of numerology based on sounds rather than letters. The result is a highly-effective system of numerology which is easy to learn and use.  You will be able to add this technique to any system of numerology you currently use and thus improve you overall accuracy. This workshop will also teach you how to use the Kabalistic secrets of Sound Numerology to work magick that can improve your life and the lives of others.
  • Spirit Companions and You

  • The Spiritual Hooker
Presented by: Denise "Dirty Mother" Cumor

    Babalon Rising 2015
In our modern world the term prostitution conjures much negative reaction, viewed as an illegal act, performed by those treated as subhuman. Buried under 5,000 years of patriarchy is the knowledge that prostitute is a term derived from priestess. This workshop will explore the ancient temples of Inanna, the Judaic re-shaping of her sacred symbols and stories and how this still affects us today. We will also take a look at the resurgence of the sacred whore and the practice of sacred sexuality as it re-emerges in the modern world.
  • Spiritual Transformation Processes

  • Submission and Will
    Presented by:
    Laurelei Black and friends
    Babalon Rising 2015
BDSM and sexual power exchange are well-known tools within the Sacred Sexuality community, but how do they play out in a Thelemic setting? Can you be both a sub and a Thelemite? How? Why? If you think the answers to these questions are simple or clear, be wary. In her 7 years of presenting on Sacred Sexuality at Babalon Rising, Laurelei has heard heated and well-reasoned arguments on every side of this topic. Join us for a friendly and respectful round-table discussion on the intersection of Submission and Will.

Beyond the stultifying 1950's ideal of a repressed nuclear family is Sacred Sexuality, Magick, BDSM, GBLT, Paganism, polyamory and the Utopia of Choice: Intentional Community. Tantric Kriya Yoga is an ancient Art and Science that clears the way for us to experience expanded states of consciousness and bliss in the here and now. It is clearly aligned with many other forces of transformation in the world today, providing a consistent paradigm through which to view this change. The facilitator is a certified teacher of Ipsalu Tantra Kriya Yoga, receiving training and mentoring from several accomplished teachers of this system, including Bodhi Avinasha, who co-wrote the contemporary classic tantric text "Jewel in the Lotus" with Sunyata Saraswati and authored "The Ipsalu Formula - A Method for TantraBliss". • Telesmatic Magick
    Presented by:
    Donald M. Kraig
    Babalon Rising 2011
You read it right—this is a class on telesmatic magic, not about talismans. Telesmatic magic was one of the most important systems of magick used by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, yet is little-known today. In this class you will learn how the Golden Dawn used this powerful technique and how you can use it in your magick. Here you will finally learn why the Golden Dawn wanted members to memorize all of those darned correspondences!

  • Temple Dance
    Presented by: Laurelei Black

    Babalon Rising 2009, 2017
In this 2-hour class, learn about creating shapes with the body to heighten ritual experience, discuss the differences between stage performance and temple dance, and practice moving energy through the body to create ritual modes of movement.  This class is open to anyone (male or female) who is willing to try to dance. (Folks with limited mobility can dance from their chairs!) Movement and dance are often based in experimentation and practice, much like magick. Since this class features BOTH, an audience would likely be unsettling for beginners.  Please bring plenty of water and a towel to sit on. Wear comfy shoes (or none at all).
  • Thai Chi

If you do practice one of the meditative forms, please come and let’s demonstrate them for people at the festival.

  • Thelemic Nation of Loa: A Grand Experiment
    Presented by:
    Louis Martiniè
    Babalon Rising 2014
Will: This open ended session will set a current in motion designed to manifest an individual Thelemic Loa throughout the time and the space of Babalon Rising.  Love: There will be an introduction to New Orleans Voodoo / Loa and a discussion of the ways in which our practices lend themselves to a joining with other spiritual practices. A discussion of the aspects and attributes ascribed to Thelemic Deities will follow. Possible manifestations from the joining of the two currents will be offered and examined.  The Thelemic Loa chosen by a participant will be seated within the body of the participant using a conjure composed of honey and absinthe that has been “spiritually cooked.” A small bit will be ingested and the conjures location within the body will be calculated. A vow to have all food and drink ingested during the time of Babalon Rising move within the participants body to this location to feed the Deities manifestation may be taken.  Comment: Actual manifestations of the joining of the two currents could be posted on a designated internet site and compared. For me, this is congruent with a working I did in 1986 with “Agwe Babalon.” I have bits of pages from an original Equinox I will add to the cooker.

  • Theurgy and Thelema
    Presented by:
    Brandy Williams
    Babalon Rising 2016
“There is no part of me that is not of the gods.” What does that mean?  Thelema is a theurgic system rooted in Neo-Platonism. The Platonic philosophers were also Pagan priests and priestesses. They explained the soul’s descent into incarnation and the path of return to the realm of the gods. Recent scholarship re-links the philosophical texts to the practical rituals preserved in medieval grimoires and rediscovered in ancient texts. This presentation reviews Liber Astarte in the context of contemporary and ancient theurgy. Theurgic ritual offers a deeper understanding of Nuit and Hadit, Babalon and Chaos, Ra-Hoor-Khuit and Baphomet, and of ourselves.
  • Tlazolteotl: The Manifestion of the Babalon Archetype within the Mexica Culture
    Presented by: Tsesi Tsones

    Babalon Rising 2017
This presentation explores the themes of Babalon within Mexica (Aztec to most) culture, and her manifestation as Tlazolteotl, whose name literally means 'sacred shit', from Tlazolt 'filth, excrement, taboo' and 'teotl' the core sacred principle of the Mexica. We'll explore the breakdown of the sense of ones world in order to arise out of the abysml shitstorm in the expansion of ones horizons. Tlazolteotl is banisher of barriors, and restrictions as well she who recieves and cleanes one of all sin. The word of sin is restriction.
  • To Me, My Love: Ritual
    Presented by:
    Louis Martiniè
    Babalon Rising 2009
The purpose of this Working is to create a space in which the ritualists will be able to see through the eyes of an entity they fear or one that causes them horror. Ritualists are asked to consider the value of constructing a mask or a veil impregnated with the aspects or attributes of this entity. Preferably a veil or mask that occludes but does not blind the eyes. Some materials will be available before the rite. If the use of a mask or veil is not to the participants will, then any magickal link they choose to use is proper.  The hands and feet will be buried in the earth allowing the Ancestors, Guedes, and Barons to act as a stabilizing influence while the ritualists undergo this experience. Your ancestors will stand with you.  That which horrifies us, that which we fear we embrace in one of the strongest forms of union. This ritual will explore that union. The key words for this Working are Respect, Territory, and Understanding.  We do not see what is "really" before us. Through selective perception, we see what best allows us to survive. In seeing through the eyes of the target entity, the ritualists will see what best allows that type of entity to survive. Great understanding can come through this.  This is also not a psychological exercise in which one calls up one's fears and overcomes them any more than entering a cage with a rabid bear is a psychological exercise. One respects the power of the bear and actively acknowledges its territory.
  • Touch of Love Sacred Touch Circle
    Presented by: Jason Winslade

    Babalon Rising 2015
As embodied souls, creatures of flesh and spirit, we have a dual need for loving touch. Pleasure is a sacred gift, a sacrament from the Divine -- because God/Universe loves us and wants us to be happy. Giving and receiving pleasurable touch allows us to connect with each other and with OURSELVES, while reaching upward and outward to the Divine. And while pleasurable touch certainly can be erotic, it doesn't have to be.  In the first hour, participants will be led through a series of exercises designed to create and strengthen boundaries, providing practice saying no and hearing no without attachment, and finding your enthusiastic "Yes!" We will be discussing and following the guidelines established by the international cuddle party movement.  In the second hour, participants will be given the opportunity to partake in a facilitated sacred touch experience in small groups. We ask that participants refrain from nudity but wear loose clothing. While the focus for this particular workshop will be strictly on non-sexual contact, we will discuss the potential for carrying these guidelines into a more sexual environment for a possible evening ritual at the flesh tent as part of the Feast of the Beast.  We welcome all those interested in discussing these topics and putting them into practice. However, no one will be obligated to partake in any activity.
  • Touch and Transcendence

This will be a "hands-on" class (enthusiatic consent required) where participants will be encouraged to learn, share, and experiment. Bring your favorite sensation toys, if you desire
  • Toward a New Model for Relationships: Spiritual, Historical and Legal Aspects of the Intimate Partnership
    Presented by: Paul Ravenscraft

    Babalon Rising 2008
Conventional marriages predate reliable recorded history. Changes in family structures and definitions over the years have led to evolving views of intimate relationships and how these are regarded by the state. In a practical sense, the sharing of property and provisions for inheritance are always at the heart of such issues. What government restrictions exist on handfastings, common law marriages, civil unions and domestic partnerships? How has legislation such as the “Defense of Marriage Act” impacted same-gender and multiple-partner relationships? We will also explore opportunities in Corporate Law for the creation of such legal partnerships when they are thwarted by existing Family Law.

    Presented by: Lacrimae Mundi

    Babalon Rising 2015
This workshop will begin with several readings from Women of Babalon, a Howling of Womens Voices. We invite you, the workshop participant to listen, think, and offer your view, and your experience on Babalon. Although there is no definitive word or image of what it means to be a BABALON, her very nature speaks to change. Babalon spins and the worlds revolve. Several years ago, a project was begun at Black Moon, concerning the modern evolution of Babalon. Sixteen female authors and artists were asked to contribute their personal work with Babalon to a compendium of sex Magick, both in theory and practice. Very little has been written on this, and what has been recorded has been mostly written by men. These female magicians came together to represent young and old, spiritual, social, and offer a how-to for the ages.
  • Women's Magick in Thelema
    Presented by: Brandy Williams

    Babalon Rising 2016
Who is the Woman Thelemite? She is the Scarlet Woman, the priestess of Babalon, the transgressive power of women’s sexuality. Babalon points us to the ancient Goddesses of Life and their priestesses in the Aeon of Isis. The Aeon of Osiris rejected the Goddess and elevated the God to the status of creator. In that aeon Western religion rejected the female divine and demonized women’s sexuality. In the New Aeon the Goddess comes roaring back! Babalon’s priestesses demand to be acknowledged magicians in our own right. Thelemites in this Aeon take up the task of balancing the Goddess and the God, re-sacralizing sexuality, and working as sisters, brothers and lovers with each other.
  • The Wounded Psychic: Psychological and Social Consequences of Psychism
    Presented by: Marty Laubach

    Babalon Rising 2008
Just as mythology has given us the archetype of the wounded healer, modern media (TV, books, movies) has played with an archetype of a “wounded psychic” – people who suffer for their psychic abilities. When my research into neopagans supported the archetype, I checked it among the broader population and found that while psychism is different from schizotypy, it does lead to tendencies which we should all be aware. This is especially true if, as Leary says, “ritual is to the internal sciences what experiment is to the external sciences,” and our experiments in inducing spiritual experiences are activating our psychism. This workshop explores the consequences of psychism, first presenting my findings, then opening for discussion of experiences of participants, and concluding with a discussion of how we can avoid the pitfalls.

    Presented by:
    Bill Duvendack
    Babalon Rising 2012
